Preconception Care

‘Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.’ – Elizabeth Stone

We consider it our mission at Memorial Hospital to help you find joy in the journey of motherhood. Our aim with preconception care is to improve the couple’s health, so that we can ensure the baby’s health in the future.

At this stage, we take a thorough medical history to detect previous poor pregnancy outcomes and genetic conditions:

  • We screen for thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia, which are common in California.
  • We also screen for anaemia, thyroid diseases, and diabetes mellitus.
  • We treat preexisting conditions in order to optimise pregnancy outcomes.

Prenatal Care

‘Carrying a baby is the most rewarding experience a mother can enjoy.’ – Jayne Mansfield

Our expert doctors at Memorial Hospital are here to protect and maintain your own, as well as your baby’s health, and also to prepare you for labour. To do this, we provide routine care, which includes the following:

  • Monthly checkups during the first six months of pregnancy
  • Biweekly checkups during the seventh and eighth months
  • Weekly checkups during the ninth month of your pregnancy

During these visits to your obstetrician…

  • We will perform blood and urine tests, and provide you with the necessary prescriptions and supplements.
  • We will check your blood pressure and monitor the progress of your pregnancy through ultrasound scans.
  • We will provide you with classes on how pregnancy affects your nutrition, weight, sexual life, and activities like travelling. These classes also tackle the care of newborns, breastfeeding, and vaccination.

Prenatal Care: High-risk Pregnancy

Most of the time, having a baby is a natural process. However, expecting mothers and their babies may sometimes be susceptible to complications. This occurs due to conditions that have existed before pregnancy or those that can arise during pregnancy. Early labour and multiple pregnancies are also considered high-risk.

Preexisting conditions include:

  • Advanced maternal age
  • Chronic hypertension
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Blood clotting disorders
  • Inherited blood diseases
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Neurological conditions

Conditions that may arise during pregnancy include:

  • Bleeding
  • Abnormal position of the placenta
  • Abnormal growth of the baby
  • Hypertension, which may include preeclampsia
  • Gestational diabetes

High-risk pregnancies require special care and closer monitoring, hence more frequent prenatal visits. Good prenatal care helps keep complications to a minimum and makes it possible to have a healthy baby despite the high risks involved.

At Memorial Hospital, we implement collaborative multidisciplinary care specifically tailored to the needs of each individual case.
